A photo dump is a batch of loosely related, mostly unedited photos posted together as one carousel. It usually covers a week, a month, a night out or a trip, and it works as the opposite of a highlight reel: candid shots, blurry ones, food, feet, pets, a screenshot, and one photo where everybody is blinking.

What photo dump means

The name is literal. Instead of choosing one perfect image, you dump a slice of your camera roll into a single post — eight to fifteen slides under a loose theme like "August", "the trip" or "this weekend", with at least one photo bad enough to prove nobody was trying. That last part matters: a dump that looks curated stops reading as a dump.

People also say picture dump, Instagram dump or dump post; on TikTok the same idea runs as a slideshow set to music. It is all the same format.

Why the format took over

Partly because it removes the hardest decision on Instagram: which photo. Posting twelve is easier than choosing one, so people who had stopped posting started again. The bar drops from "worth a post" to "happened this month".

And partly because the algorithm quietly loves it. Every swipe counts as engagement. A carousel someone scrolled past can come back in their feed opening on a different slide. And dumps with friends in them get sent around in DMs — Adam Mosseri has said sends weigh more than likes when Instagram decides who else sees a post. How to make a photo dump

  1. Pick a window, not a topic. One month, one trip, one weekend. The theme comes out of the photos.
  2. Cut to 10–15. One photo per moment — three near-identical sunsets are where people stop swiping.
  3. Mix the distances. Faces, details, one wide shot, one screenshot. Variety keeps the swipe going.
  4. Mind the first and last slide. The first is the cover: it opens the post and sits on your grid. The last is what people remember — end quiet or funny, not random.
  5. One aspect ratio. The first slide sets the shape for the rest, so export everything at 1080×1350 and nothing gets cropped.
  6. Caption it lightly. A few lowercase words. Long captions fight the format — 100+ short ones here.

Raw dump vs designed dump
